Portfolio

Looking for a designer that understands the expectations of a Fortune 500 enterprise as well as the needs of a lean startup? I’ve been fortunate enough to work for both and have more well-rounded skills for it.

Examples of previous projects are below which will hopefully give you a feel for the breadth of my skills. For a more in-depth look into my strategy, sketching, wireframing, prototyping and decision making abilities – download my case studies.

My approach to design

Damien Newman’s Design Squiggle is such an apt illustration of the process of design. So many people still hear “design” and think “make it look pretty”, which is not only belittling to an entire profession, but doesn’t remotely capture the breadth of the design process – whether it’s designing a software product, a new car or a business card for a client, design is a multi-step process that takes into account its audience, their environment and intended function.

These days I consider myself a UX Generalist. I may not be best in any one category, but I’m pretty damn good in a quite a few of them. To use a baseball analogy – most companies don’t need a specialized left-handed closer, they need a solid utility infielder that's as comfortable at first base as they are at shortstop. I’m a seasoned utility infielder, adept in most any role you put me in.

Research & Synthesis
Before you can design that robust new site, that complex widget or killer feature – you have to cut through the noise and find some clarity. While I’m very competent at user interviews, card sorting and competitive research – pair me with a true UX researcher and watch us go.
Concept & Prototype
Taking that knowledge gained and using it to create a better product, that’s where I feel like I bring the most value. I’ve worked for a variety of industries: news, banking, consumer products, consulting and more. It’s always been a strength of mine to empathize with the varied users for each company.
Design
My education is in visual design and I love the world of color, type, layouts. My career led me early on to designing for the screen – first for websites and then for products. There are so many aspects to UI design, that I find myself constantly being exposed to new facets: accessibility, responsive & adaptive, mobile first, etc.
